Chapter Fourteen

The drive out to the trailhead was very familiar to Raul, even though he hadn’t stopped at the small parking lot before.

“If we stay on this road for long enough we end up in the Trails End campgrounds, right?”

Veronica nodded. “Yup. It’s called that because if you tried to keep going any further north, you’d end up falling into Seagull Lake!”

Raul nodded. “I’ve been up there with Jake and I ran around the campground repeatedly. We put two kayaks into the lake and paddled around for a while.”

Veronica glanced at him quickly before looking back at the road with a small smile on her face. “I wonder if it’s all of the paddling you’re doing that has given you that definition in your arms and shoulders?”

“I’m surprised you noticed,” Raul said.

“Why? I always notice what you look like.”

“Do you?” He stared at her profile for a moment. “I’m glad. Because I always notice how good you look. Like today, you left your hair down, which I really like. I like how the sun makes it look like white gold…and that blue shirt you have on matches your eyes.”

Veronica looked over at him again, quickly. “Really? You are quite the observant one, aren’t you?”

“I have to be. How I play other people is by noticing how they act. I imagine I am them and how it would feel to be them.”

“When did you start noticing stuff like that?”

Raul shrugged. “Dunno. I’ve always done it, for as long as I can remember. I wasn’t ever happy with being the new kid, which is what I always was. I don’t think I ever finished a whole year in the same school…at least until high school. So I was always getting made fun of for being different, or beat up for being the new kid that no one trusted. So as my defense I’d pretend to be someone else. If I thought the bully liked sports, I’d tell him how good I was at whatever sport I thought he’d care about. If the bully liked cars or girls, I’d tell him how much experience I had with that. I got so good at lying it got harder to tell the truth. Sometimes even I believed my lies, I was that good. Now I wonder if all of that is the reason I feel like there is no real me…I’m just the sum of the roles I’ve played.”

Veronica pulled into the parking lot and put the car into park before turning to him with a smile. “I didn’t like the Raul who first got here. But when you introduced yourself to me with your real name, I realized that there is a real person inside of you, and you are an interesting man.”

“Do you think if I tell Gram-Marie my real name again she’d stop mispronouncing my name and calling me Rall?”

Veronica snickered. “I doubt it. She gets these ideas in her head, and there’s no way to convince her she might be wrong, or might need to change.
